Acne is a very scary word to teenagers. Doctors and herbalists have been searching for an effective cure for years. Some progress has been made, but still there is no cure. People who suffer from acne have been using creams, medications and lotions to rid themselves of the unsightly problem. Microdermabrasion for acne might be an alternative treatment to consider.

Only recently have people been using microdermabrasion for acne and acne scarring. This procedure will remove the dead skin cells that clog the pores. Clogging the pores contribute to the development of acne. Removing these dead skin cells can open the pores, decrease the amount of blackheads and reduce or eliminate the problem of acne.

Microdermabrasion is a simple, non-invasive procedure that revitalizes and renews dull skin, reduces large pores, erases many fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks and age spots. The procedure involves using a hand-held device that blows crystals onto skin. These crystals gently polish the skin before a vacuum tube removes the crystals and the dead skin cells.

The acne scars and the blackheads are stripped away through the combination of gentle skin abrasion and vacuum suction. Though a fine layer of the skin is removed, the skin is not damaged.

One factor you may want to consider before getting microdermabrasion is the cost. The price of a treatment can vary between $50 and $300. If you have moderate to severe acne, one treatment will certainly not eliminate the problem. You may require several treatments. Also, microdermabrasion is usually not covered by your health insurance. Several treatments can add up to a substantial amount of money.

There are a few clinical studies found when you do a search. One small study showed good results when treating acne with microdermabrasion. The small study had 25 subjects; 72 % had excellent or good results, 17 % had fair results, and only 12% had poor results. Larger studies would need to be done to prove its effectiveness.

It seems that microdermabrasion is best for mild to moderate forms of acne. If you suffer from moderate to severe acne or acne scarring, this treatment may not be right for you. The cost may be too high, and some experts have questioned the effectiveness of the treatment when the acne is severe.

As you will find with any medicine or treatment, there are a few side effects with microdermabrasion. It may cause a temporary redness on your skin. Blotchiness and peeling may also occur. On rare occasions, the skin may be permanently discolored in certain areas.

Microdermabrasion for acne is a treatment that may be worth exploring. It will not be a cure for everyone. Consider the cost, the amount of treatments needed, and the side effects before beginning the process. It has helped some patients with acne, and appears to be one of the weapons in the arsenal in the fight against acne. Consult with your physician before starting any treatment; they will be able to give you the best advice regarding microdermabrasion.
