Alicia Keys is actually the stage name of Alicia Augello Cook. She was born on January 25, 1981 in New York City. She was raised by her single mother in Hell's Kitchen, which is a gritty part of town that has housed some rough crowds, including gangsters and members of notorious Irish underworld mobs. She was an only child, born to Teresa Augello, who was a Scottish-Italian paralegal and actress.

Her father was an African American flight attendant named Craig Cook. Alicia has expressed contentment with being biracial, celebrating the fact that she can relate well to the varied cultural aspects of each. Her parents remained together until she turned two years old.

Keys entered the world of acting and music at a young age. As she grew up, her mother continually enrolled her in music and dancing lessons. By the age of four, she made a guest acting appearance on the popular television program "The Cosby Show". At age seven, she began to play the piano, focusing on classical composers such as Chopin, Mozart and Beethoven.

At age twelve, she began to study choir music at the Professional Performing Arts High School. She not only ended up graduating early, at the age of sixteen, but she was elected to be their class valedictorian. She enrolled at Columbia University but after only one month, dropped out to focus on her musical and acting career.

Keys' musical style and talent has received rave reviews around the world. She is well known for her mastery of the piano and stellar singing voice. Incorporating classical riffs into pop music is one of her stylized trademarks. Her song lyrics often deal with love, loss and the strength of a woman.

Alicia has had many successful musical recordings and has been well received in the acting world, as well. Her first album entitled "Songs in A Minor" sold more than 12 million copies around the globe. She's had several Number One albums plus has won multiple Grammy Awards. She has appeared in both television and films, including "The Nanny Diaries", "The Secret Life of Bees" and "Smokin' Aces".

This talented musician and actress is also well known for her charitable heart. She is a co-founder of the organization "Keep a Child Alive", which is a non-profit striving to provide medicine to those suffering from AIDS and HIV. She's visited several countries in Africa in order to solicit care for the children.

Alicia Keys continues to have a profound impact globally. This is due to both her artistic talents and her humanitarian focus.
